Bailiff seizes doormat
Rosie explained that this was the first time she’d heard of this debt, and anyway she couldn’t afford to pay that much all at once, and she was a student on a very low income.
Mr Whalley replied politely, "Look, because of data protection I can't talk about this over the phone, I'll have to come round so we can go over it properly, when's the best time to come?"
Rosie didn't want that, so, mumbling that she would call him back, she put the phone down.
Rosie then rang the Council where she used to live and spoke to them.
They told her that she owed Council Tax for the previous year.
Rosie explained that her ex-flatmate had paid all the bills, she knew this because she had given her the money to pay them.
The Council Tax employee said that they were very sorry to hear of her troubles, but that the account had been passed to the Bailiffs already, because a Liability Order had been granted against her in the Magistrates Court for £537.54, plus costs of £90.
Rosie asked if they would accept £25 a month?
The Council Tax employee said it was now out of her hands and Rosie must speak to the Bailiff.
