The shadow behind the glass door is a Bailiff!
John and Elizabeth Steiger.
John is a polite, quietly spoken man who owes nearly £12,000 in council tax arrears.
He’s managed to avoid enforcement action for nearly 11 years, living under the radar by being on benefit or not registering for council tax/electoral roll.
It wasn’t planned that way it just sort of happened, and in any case, John believes that “what they don’t know can’t hurt you”, he doesn’t like paying tax, and this huge debt is the result.
A year or so ago John and Elizabeth bought a house in their own name, and automatically put themselves on the map.
The local authority didn’t waste time getting in touch, and after sending the usual warning letters followed by a summons, and the pre-enforcement 14 day letter, which of course John ignored, the account was passed to the bailiffs.
Now it was the bailiffs turn to send letters…
This was the first time that John had had contact with bailiffs.
The letters that the bailiffs send are designed to be frightening.
In John’s case they worked a little bit too well; he became so stressed that each time there was contact from the bailiffs, or he thought that there might be a bailiff about; he would become paranoid and agitated.
