The bailiffs wrote back, asking for evidence that it wasnʼt his car, suggesting that copies of the logbook and the insurance documents would be sufficient.
John wrote back, pointing out that he had every right to keep his financial difficulties private, and that they should either accept his declaration or seize the car and accept the consequences that would surely follow.
Mr Marley quietly accepted the declaration.
Over the Christmas holiday period when bailiffs normally take a few weeks off, everyone was able to relax and enjoy what is probably the most important festival in the British calendar.
The new year came and the bailiffs finally decided that they wouldnʼt be able to collect any money off John, so they contacted him and told him they were handing the account back to the council.
John felt like he’d won, and life began to return to normal in the Steiger household.
One fine day in February, a smartly dressed man in his early thirties called. He pleasantly asked for John by name. And when John answered, the man gave him a brown envelope.
