Sisters beat the bailiff

David is a self-employed electrician who lives with his wife Angela in a small two bedroom house, he stores his most valuable tools in the spare room, they have no children.
He’s had a difficult time during the recession and had fallen behind with some bills, didn’t pay some council tax instalments, and owed £478.00 Council Tax arrears.
He didn’t want to worry Angela, so he didn’t tell her; and when the Council Tax demands came he threw them away; and when the 14 day pre-enforcement letter came he threw that away as well.
In fact he threw all the debt letters away. That’s not so unusual, lots of people do that….

One sunny day in June there was a knock on the door, and when Mrs Grey answered, she found a well dressed and quite small elderly man standing there who introduced himself as Leonard Bradbury. He asked her to call him Len.

He was a very polite, well mannered and respectful old man, and he showed her his identification and authority from the Council.
He explained that he was a bailiff and that he’d like to come in and sort out a reasonable payment arrangement for their Council Tax arrears.

At first Angela was horrified, she knew that David hadn’t had much work, but she’d no idea they owed money to the Council.
